La Merced is the capital of the district and province of Chanchamayo, in the department of Junín. It is located east of Lima, in the Central Jungle region of Peru. Its history dates back to the Yanesha and Asháninka civilizations, who inhabited the area before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, who officially founded the city in 1884.
