ABOUT La Oroya

La Oroya is the capital of the Yauli province located in the Junín department. It is situated in the central region of the country at an altitude of 3,720 meters above sea level and connects to routes heading toward the coast, south, east, and north. It was founded under the name San Jerónimo de Callapampa in 1681, but after independence in 1893, it was renamed Villa de La Oroya.

La Oroya is primarily an industrial center with limited tourist activities. The city and its surroundings offer more cultural attractions and also feature a natural mountainous landscape. Its strategic location in the central highlands, near Jauja and Carhuamayo, makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the Mantaro Valley.

The main economic activity in this area has historically been linked to mining, particularly the extraction of silver, zinc, and copper, as well as metallurgy. The city is home to an important metal refinery, which remains one of the main sources of employment for its residents.

La Oroya has a temperate, mountainous climate. During the summer season, precipitation is more common, so if you are interested in visiting this place, it is recommended to do so in the winter, which is drier.

La Oroya is located near cities that are more attractive to tourists, such as Huancayo and Junín, about 130 kilometers away; Concepción, 100 kilometers away; and Jauja, 65 kilometers away.
