ABOUT Jauja

Jauja is the capital of the district and province of Jauja in the Junín department, and was founded in 1534 by Francisco Pizarro. Located in central Peru, to the north of the Mantaro Valley, it is one of the highest cities in the country, standing at 3,390 meters above sea level. Initially, Jauja was intended to be the capital of the territories conquered by the Spanish, earning it the title of the "first capital of Peru."

The Plaza de Armas, situated at the heart of Jauja, is the city’s main tourist attraction. Its traditional Andean design, with meticulously maintained gardens, benches, and a central fountain, preserves the essence of Peru’s culture and history in this region.

In the plaza, you’ll find the Municipality of Jauja and the Santa Fe Church of Jauja, a white colonial-style building that is one of the city's most iconic structures. There is also an ornamental fountain that creates a peaceful atmosphere in the square.

Jauja has several other squares or parks within its neighborhoods, including La Plaza Monumental de Yauyos, which is often used as a gathering center for various recreational and cultural events, and La Plaza La Libertad, also known as Santa Isabel, with a beautiful arch entrance, green areas, and recreational spaces where artisan fairs are held.

Jauja has a beautiful panoramic viewpoint of the city, where you can go hiking and appreciate different types of paths and views. Access to the viewpoint is relatively easy, and many tourists take advantage of their visit to enjoy the sunset, when the sky is painted with warm colors and the view becomes even more stunning.

The climate in Jauja is temperate, with small variations due to its location in the central Andes of Peru. It is generally cool throughout the year, with moderate temperatures during the day and cold nights ranging from 12°C to 20°C. The best time to visit Jauja is from April to October, when the weather is drier and more pleasant for outdoor activities. However, many prefer to visit during the rainy season, as the lush green nature stands out, especially for those who enjoy a cooler climate and vibrant vegetation.

The city's main bus terminal is Terrapuerto Hatun Xauxa, located on Av. José Olaya 101, where various bus companies operate. However, some companies have their own terminals, such as Cruz del Sur on Av. Francisco Pizarro 220, and Expreso Internacional on Av. Luis Bardales Cuadra 4, Corner with Av. Evitamiento - Stand 20.
