ABOUT Trujillo

Trujillo is the capital of the department of La Libertad and is located on the northwest coast of Peru, near the historic Moche Valley. It is the third most populous city in the country, standing out for its cultural wealth and historical importance. It was founded in April 1534 by Diego de Almagro but was consolidated by Francisco Pizarro three years later. Today, it is considered one of the most important destinations, thanks to its strategic location and historical legacy.

Among the main attractions of the city, we find the majestic Plaza de Armas of Trujillo, a place surrounded by an incredible architectural design based on the colonial era, with streets adorned with stately houses, immense churches, and baroque-style balconies. The square is the heart of Trujillo, and at its center, you can appreciate the great Monument to Liberty, which symbolizes the struggle against oppression and liberation. Additionally, the Government Palace of La Libertad and the Trujillo Chancellery are located there.

The Trujillo Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa María, embellishes the Plaza de Armas with its imposing façade and its main altar decorated with gold details. At night, the cathedral is illuminated, becoming a meeting point for visitors and locals who stroll through the heart of the city. In the same square, Casa Urquiaga stands out, a historic mansion that today functions as a museum. This space, which offers free admission, exhibits valuable elements of local history, making it a must-visit for culture lovers.

A few blocks from the square, we find Iturregui Palace, a majestic colonial mansion. This building stands out for its large windows, balconies with delicate wrought iron, and elegant attached columns that adorn its structure, reflecting Trujillo's rich architectural heritage.

Another architectural marvel is found in Plazuela El Recreo, a charming space located in the historic center of the city. This place stands out for its tranquility and well-kept ambiance, adorned with gardens, benches, and a central fountain that invite relaxation. One of its most striking elements is the entrance arch, designed in a neoclassical style that gives it an elegant and distinguished aesthetic. Additionally, in its surroundings, you can observe remnants of the Trujillo Wall, a defensive structure that once completely surrounded the city. The wall was at least 5 kilometers long and was built to protect Trujillo from attacks and threats. It had several access gates, and in this area, some of the most notable sections can be seen, reminding visitors of the historical and cultural importance of this colonial defense system.

Trujillo's climate is characterized as semi-arid and warm, with a generally mild, mostly sunny climate throughout the year, complemented by fresh breezes thanks to its proximity to the sea. The best season to visit Trujillo is in the summer, although temperatures can fluctuate around 30°C, the coastal location helps moderate the heat, making it a desirable destination. It is also ideal to visit the city in the spring when the climate becomes milder and more pleasant. This season is perfect for enjoying cultural events and festivals, which encourage outdoor activities.

The Trujillo Bus Terminal is located at Avenida José E. Velasco 1026, in the district of La Esperanza, and is the largest in the city. Various bus companies operate there, covering routes from other cities such as Piura and Lima, among others.
