ABOUT Ica

Ica is the capital of the Ica region, located in the southwest of Peru, right next to the Ica Desert. Its name comes from “IK,” meaning “river, well, lagoon,” which refers to its geography in a deep valley between two mountain ranges, through which a river flows and is surrounded by lagoons.

The Plaza de Armas of Ica is the central location of the city, featuring different monuments and beautiful fountains that enhance the plaza's atmosphere. At the intersection, you'll find the Cathedral of Ica, also known as the Cathedral of San Jerónimo, which is one of the oldest monuments and symbolizes the region's religious history. It was built around the 18th century and has been remodeled several times, especially after earthquakes.

Close to the plaza, the Church of San Francisco de Asís stands, also with centuries of history and significant for the Catholic religion and colonial heritage. Additionally, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Luren is a temple dedicated to the patron saint of the city, considered a national sanctuary, featuring a tall dome and a neo-classical crucifix.

Ica is well-known for its design, architecture, and distribution of parks. Some of the most beautiful parks include the Francisco Pérez Anampa Park, alongside the Parroquia Santo Domingo De Guzmán; Andrés Avelino Cáceres Park; Sol de Ica Urbanization Park; Santa Rosa Park; Santo Domingo de Marcona Park; and Santo Domingo de Guzmán Park, all of which stand out for their well-maintained green areas.

Thanks to its warm climate and irrigation from the valley, Ica thrives economically on agriculture and agro-exportation, particularly of local crops such as grapes, asparagus, date palms, pecan nuts, blueberries, and cotton. The region is also known for its own vineyards, where they process wine and pisco.

Ica is one of the sunniest places in the country, offering summer-like weather year-round, making it an ideal destination for travelers. Summer temperatures range between 22°C and 30°C, while winter temperatures vary between 15°C and 25°C.

You can reach Ica by bus from various cities. The Ica Bus Terminal, located at Av. San Martín 1410, receives buses daily from nearby cities such as Nazca, Pisco, Chincha, Ayacucho, and more. There are also private terminals for bus companies like CIVA, Oltursa, Cruz del Sur, and PerúBus.
