ABOUT Huaraz

Huaraz, the capital of the Áncash region, was founded on January 20, 1574, originally named San Sebastián de Guarás. Located at 3,050 meters above sea level in the southern part of the Callejón de Huaylas, it is one of the main cities in the Peruvian highlands, with an estimated population of 145,000 by 2025. Its origins trace back to pre-Inca settlements along the Quilcay and Santa rivers, and its Spanish foundation aimed to organize the local indigenous communities.

During Peru’s independence, Huaraz stood out for its support to the liberating army, earning the title of “Very Generous City of Huaraz” bestowed by Simón Bolívar. In 1970, the city was nearly destroyed by a devastating earthquake, an event that led to it being known as the “Capital of International Friendship” due to the global solidarity received during its reconstruction. Today, it is a dynamic and diverse urban center with an economy based on mining, agriculture, commerce, and primarily tourism.

Huaraz is internationally recognized as the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash mountain ranges, popular destinations for adventure sports and trekking. Additionally, its proximity to archaeological sites such as Chavín de Huántar, Huilcahuaín, and the Conchucos area enriches its cultural offerings. Its tourist infrastructure and strategic location make it a key destination for those seeking to combine nature, history, and adventure in the Peruvian highlands.
