ABOUT Mollendo

Mollendo is a coastal city in southern Peru, located in the province of Islay within the department of Arequipa. It sits along the Pacific Ocean, 85 km from the city of Arequipa, and is the starting point of the Southern Railway, which connects it with major cities such as Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, and Juliaca.

Although the city was never officially founded, its anniversary is celebrated every January 6th, marking the inauguration of the railway in 1871—a key moment that boosted Mollendo’s urban and economic development.

Mollendo also plays a strategic role in the economy of southern Peru. Its port, Matarani, is one of the country’s most important, serving as a hub for the export of minerals, grains, and international cargo, including shipments from Brazil via the Interoceanic Highway.

With over 22,000 residents, Mollendo is the third most populous city in the region and the second most important economic center in Arequipa, driven by its port, industrial activity, and growing tourism.
