ABOUT Chincha

Chincha is a province in the Ica department, located in the coastal region of southern Peru. It consists of 11 districts, with five bordering the Pacific Ocean, three in the central part of the province, and the remaining three extending inland toward the Ica River Valley, a mountainous area near the Andean foothills, marking the transition to the Andean highlands.

The capital city of the province is Chincha Alta, one of the most important cities in terms of population density, economic activity, and urban development. This city serves as the main transportation hub, with various bus companies operating in different terminals rather than a single centralized bus station. The most prominent terminals include CIVA, PerúBus, and Turismo Jaksa. On kupos.pe or through our app, you can find available routes and plan your visit to Chincha.

Chincha’s diverse districts offer architectural landmarks that showcase the region’s beauty and culture. In the historic center, you will find the Plaza de Armas de Chincha, designed with an urban layout inspired by English and French parks from the colonial era. The most striking feature of the plaza is its more than 100 tall palm trees, which provide shade and a relaxing atmosphere. Adjacent to the plaza is the Santo Domingo Parish, recognized as a cultural heritage site.

The district of El Carmen is home to another beautiful square, Plaza de Armas El Carmen, where the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen stands out with its striking yellow façade and traditional religious architectural style. Inside, the revered image of the Virgin of Carmen is a focal point of devotion for the locals. This deep-rooted faith is celebrated through various artistic expressions, including dance and music, as well as traditional ceremonies that strengthen the community’s cultural and spiritual ties.

Chincha’s coastal region comprises the districts of Chincha Baja, Tambo de Mora, Sunampe, Grocio de Prado, and El Carmen. While El Carmen has a coastal area, most of its territory extends into the valley. These districts boast stunning beaches and a variety of water activities. Playa Wakama is known for its bungalows, offering visitors a rustic retreat in a serene setting. Playa Chinchaycamac is famous for its calm waters, making it one of the most visited beaches in the area. Playa Jahuay, a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts, provides an ideal setting for this activity. Other notable beaches include Las Violetas, Lurinchincha, El Silencio, and Las Totoritas.

The Chincha Valley is home to the districts of Chavín, San Juan de Yanac, and San Pedro de Huacarpana. This region is known for its stunning natural landscapes and vast agricultural fields, offering a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can explore the farmland, learn about the harvesting processes of key regional crops, and gain insight into the production of grapes, corn, and cotton, which are vital to the local economy.

The culture of Chincha is a blend of pre-Columbian and Afro-Peruvian influences. This fusion originated during the colonial period when African descendants were brought to the region and forced to work in agriculture under slavery. Today, cultural expressions such as ceramics, woodworking, and textiles reflect this rich heritage. Afro-Peruvian cuisine has also left a significant mark on the region, with dishes like seafood stews and arroz con mariscos (seafood rice) being among the most celebrated, thanks to the province’s abundant fishing resources.
