ABOUT Chimbote

Chimbote is the capital of the Santa province in the Áncash department, located in northern Peru, in a coastal port area along the Pacific Ocean. It is considered one of the most important cities for the country's fishing industry.

Chimbote's roots intertwine with the ancient civilizations that flourished in the region, such as the Chimú and Moche cultures, whose legacy endures in both archaeological sites and the deeply rooted customs of the locality. Over time, with the arrival of the Spanish, Chimbote became a small port where trade took place between merchants from different regions of the country.

The city of Chimbote is known for its modern and highly functional architecture. Since it is located in a coastal zone, all buildings are designed and constructed to withstand seismic activity.

The Plaza de Armas of Chimbote is surrounded by well-maintained green areas. At the center of the plaza, a fountain enhances the beauty of the surroundings. Within the plaza, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Peter the Apostle serves as the main Catholic temple, consolidating the region’s religious identity.

The Monument to the Fisherman, a famous statue located on the Paseo de la Cultura, was erected to honor Chimbote’s fishing industry and its contribution to the city’s economic development.

Chimbote's main economic activity is currently based on three key sectors. The first is fishing and fishmeal processing, focusing on anchoveta fishing for the production of fishmeal and fish oil. Secondly, metal production, particularly steel, plays a fundamental role in construction and various industries. Thirdly, agriculture, with crops such as rice, sugarcane, and avocados, contributes significantly to the local economy.

Chimbote has a temperate desert climate, influenced by the Humboldt Current. Average temperatures range from 17°C to 25°C throughout the year, with minimal chances of rainfall due to its coastal location.

The best time to visit Chimbote is during the summer months, from December to March, when temperatures are more pleasant and less humid compared to other seasons. This period is also ideal for enjoying the beaches and natural attractions.

The Chimbote Bus Terminal is located along the Panamericana Norte Highway, near kilometer 423. This terminal serves as the main transportation hub for various bus companies operating in northern Peru, including Cruz del Norte, Ittsa Bus, and Alas Peruanas, among others.
