ABOUT Ayacucho

Ayacucho is the capital of the Ayacucho district, located in the south-central region of Peru, east of the Andes Mountains. It was founded in April 1540 by Francisco Pizarro under the name San Juan de la Frontera de Huamanga. The name “San Juan” was chosen because the location was determined on the day this saint was celebrated, while “Frontera” referred to its proximity to territories controlled by Manco Inca. Finally, “Huamanga” comes from the Quechua term Waman, meaning “Feast, hawk,” alluding to an Inca tradition that recounts how the god Wiracocha fed hawks in this place.

In Ayacucho, you will find one of Peru’s most important architectural landmarks, a heritage of the viceroyalty during the colonial period, known as the City of Churches. It is home to approximately 37 Catholic churches that blend Renaissance and Baroque styles, reflecting the cultural splendor of the era.

Among the main tourist attractions is the Plaza Mayor, where the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria stands, a temple consecrated in honor of the Virgin of the Snows. As you explore the city, you will admire colonial mansions, museums, temples, and churches that showcase its historical wealth. Additionally, in the artisan neighborhood of Santa Ana, you will discover workshops and artisans who keep Huamanga’s culture alive, offering textiles, stone carvings, and other traditional artistic expressions. For this reason, Ayacucho has been declared the Capital of Popular Art and Handicrafts of Peru.

Ayacucho's gastronomy is characterized by the combined influences of colonial and pre-Hispanic traditions and flavors. The most common ingredients include quinoa, corn, chili peppers, and potatoes. Among its most representative dishes are the "puca picante", a pork crackling stew with potatoes, toasted peanuts, and "ají panca"; the qapchi, a stew-like appetizer made with fresh cheese and rocoto chili; the "mondongo ayacuchano", a hearty soup made with corn and various cuts of beef; and the famous "cuy chactado", fried guinea pig breaded with ground corn. In addition to these traditional dishes, don’t miss out on the "muyuchi", a refreshing Andean ice cream, and "wawas", a sweet bread typical of the region, which completes this culinary experience.

The fusion of Andean civilizations' culture and the influence of the colonial Spanish era enriches the city of Ayacucho, making it an ideal travel destination. Reaching it from Lima is straightforward, as the city is approximately 560 km away via the Panamericana Sur highway and Route 28A. The journey takes about 10 hours, so traveling at night is recommended to rest during the trip. On the other hand, if you depart from Cusco, the journey extends to 12 hours and passes through a challenging route with numerous curves, steep climbs and descents, as well as sections with fog and cold weather. However, the breathtaking landscapes make every kilometer worth it, turning the bus trip into a true adventure.

Ayacucho can be visited year-round, but the best seasons are April/May and August/September when the weather is more temperate. Generally, Ayacucho's climate is variable, with maximum temperatures of 24°C and the possibility of sudden rains, especially between November and April.

It is the largest festival in Peru, a celebration where culture, dance, and music come to life for four days in the city. This event pays homage to Mother Earth and her fertility, filling the streets of Ayacucho with parades of dance troupes, music, creative expressions, and an explosion of colors. The majestic Ño Carnavalón, the main character of the festival, leads the parade, embodying joy and the festive spirit. If you’re passionate about Andean folk music and dance, this is the perfect time to immerse yourself in a unique cultural experience, surrounded by lively activities. Additionally, you cannot miss trying "puchero", the traditional dish of the carnival—a delicious stew of meats, rice, and other accompaniments that will delight your palate. You can find the official dates for this carnival here.

Turquoise Waters of Millpu

One of Ayacucho's most beautiful hidden treasures, cherished by tourists. It consists of around 20 natural pools with turquoise (or green, depending on the season) waters, surrounded by nature and rock formations, creating a postcard-worthy landscape. The vibrant color of the waters is due to the minerals in the river and the reflection of sunlight. To preserve this natural beauty, swimming in the waters is strictly prohibited, ensuring their color and purity remain intact. The best time to visit is between May and September. Since the journey involves a hike through rocky terrain, it is recommended to hire a guide to facilitate access and ensure safety during your visit.

Holy Week in Ayacucho

As Ayacucho is one of the areas with the strongest Catholic influence, it is natural that during Holy Week, one of the most significant and deeply rooted celebrations of faith takes place in the community. During this season, religion and art come together in religious rituals and theatrical performances that commemorate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Additionally, Holy Week is filled with popular cultural traditions throughout the week that accompany the celebration, highlighting Ayacucho's identity. Visiting the city during these celebrations and participating in these activities becomes an emotional and unique experience, allowing visitors to connect with the deepest roots of Ayacucho’s culture.
