ABOUT Arequipa

Arequipa is the capital of the Arequipa Region and the second-largest city in Peru, after Lima. Founded on August 15, 1540, it is known as the "White City" due to its architecture built with volcanic stone. Additionally, it is surrounded by three volcanoes: Ampato, Chachani, and Misti, the latter being the most recognized by locals and tourists.

The city of Arequipa offers a wide variety of tourist attractions and a rich cultural heritage. Its architecture preserves the city's heritage, standing out in the Plaza de Armas and the Historic Center of Arequipa, where buildings made of sillar, a white carved volcanic rock, create a unique landscape and are considered a marvelous sight to admire. Additionally, it is possible to appreciate arches, fountains, temples, museums, hotels, and restaurants made from this volcanic material, giving the city a unique identity with a Baroque style.

At 2,330 meters above sea level, this city is surrounded by landscapes that offer panoramic views of the city, the nearby volcanoes, and its characteristic natural surroundings. The Colca Valley, in the province of Caylloma, Arequipa, invites you on an exciting hiking adventure through breathtaking landscapes with a great diversity of flora and fauna. At the highest point of the valley, the Colca Canyon allows visitors to admire the mountain peaks and witness the majestic flight of the Andean condor, an inhabitant of the highest summits.

It is possible to enjoy natural hot springs, with high-temperature waters rich in pure minerals. For many, these places have a therapeutic effect and are considered "healing waters." Some of the most notable hot springs include Yura, Chacapi, Huancarama, and La Calera.

The Monastery of Santa Catalina is undoubtedly one of the most striking places to visit in this city. In addition to its impressive architecture, it holds a rich cultural history that reflects Arequipa's colonial and religious legacy, making it a symbol of the local heritage. Its narrow streets, courtyards, gardens, and houses, decorated in reddish and bluish tones, along with its sillar arches and walls, create a unique setting. In the past, it housed nuns from wealthy families, but today it functions as a museum open to the public.

Just as the architecture and history captivate visitors, Arequipa’s gastronomy is another of the city's great treasures. Here, you can find a diversity of traditional flavors, derived from ancestral recipes and strong colonial influence. Rocoto relleno is one of the most representative dishes, along with ocopa arequipeña. Both stand out for their intense flavor and the use of ají peppers, an essential ingredient in Peruvian culinary culture.

The best time to visit Arequipa is between may and october, when the weather is drier and the temperature hovers around 20°C, offering a pleasant environment.
